The photos show the condition of Einstein-1 after the UPS accident and the final repairs. Three places were severely damaged and the base was completely destroyed. At first I didn't believe I could repair anything. After a while I began looking at the face and seeing that repairs might be possible, although it would never be what it was.
The face, as you can see, in the comparison was moved back greatly so there would be enough material to pull a new nose from what was left. Although the new nose is not as large as Einstein's was in reality, it's not completely out of the realm of what might be acceptable. The angle of the slope is probably actually closer to his.
No glues or any form of epoxies were used. I spent about two weeks recarving and reworking the statue once I decided that repairs might be possible.
This was the state of the statue when it was mailed by Fedex and lost. If anyone happens to see it please let me know! I'd love to know what became of it.
